A sabbatical that marks a coming of age.

By: Liana Morgado, Founding Partner

Liana, who started Talk Shoppe in 2010, found her pioneering spirit from her parents who immigrated to the U.S. from Cuba before she was born. A qualitative researcher at heart had a vision for an agency that would go above and beyond, creating joy-sparking, creative, tailor-made solutions for clients.

Talk Shoppe's story began as a solo venture driven by passion and a vision. I founded this company in 2010 and have been witness to its incredible evolution.  Along the way, we've encountered and conquered obstacles, celebrated milestones, and strived to make a meaningful impact.

One of the distinctive features of Talk Shoppe's culture is our offering of a 4-week paid sabbatical after 5 years of service. Watching team members make the most of this incredible benefit has been a joy. They've used the time to explore the world, broaden their horizons, and return with fresh perspectives. Admittedly, I never thought I would take advantage of this perk myself.

The irony is hard to ignore. As the CEO (or founder), I've been so immersed in the company that the idea of stepping back felt foreign. The journey had become an inseparable part of my identity. But after 13 years, a shift occurred. It felt like the right time – the right people were in place, a strong team had emerged, and our client roster had expanded beyond expectations. The company was thriving, and I realized it was time to experience the sabbatical I had seen others enjoy.

Stepping into this new phase was both liberating and challenging. Could the company thrive without my constant presence? Would the team continue to excel? These were the questions that lingered as I temporarily relinquished the reins.

During my absence, I observed from a distance as Talk Shoppe continued to flourish. Work progressed seamlessly, projects were completed, and the team's dedication was evident. The realization that the company could function without me was a humbling yet empowering experience.

Upon my return, a blend of emotions washed over me. The company hadn't faltered – it had grown stronger. While there was a twinge of surprise that I wasn't indispensable, it was coupled with pride and contentment. Instead of feeling disheartened, I felt a sense of accomplishment knowing that the foundation I had laid paved the way for a self-sufficient team.

Through this journey, I learned that true leadership involves empowering others to shine. It's about fostering a culture where everyone contributes to the success story. Talk Shoppe isn't just my vision; it's a shared endeavor where each individual plays a vital role.

So, as I share this reflection, I'm filled with gratitude for the path we've walked. Gratitude for challenges that have molded us, victories that have propelled us, and the incredible team that's turned this company into what it is today. This journey is far from over, and I'm excited to see how our collective efforts will shape the next chapter.
